  First 100 Days Report

Adrain Mapp was sworn into office as the Mayor of Plainfield on January 1, 2014.  Prior to being elected as Mayor, Adrian served as Councilman for the 3rd Ward in the City of Plainfield; where he has resided for over 36 years.  He has been married to his childhood sweetheart, Amelia, nee Morris, for over 35 years; together they are the proud parents of two beautiful daughters, Shermona who graduated from the Pingry School in 1999 and Ayisha who graduated from the Wardlaw-Hartridge School in 2006; they both attended Howard University.

Mayor Mapp and his family attend Saint Mark’s Episcopal Church in Plainfield, where they are active members and where he and Amelia were married 35 years ago. Adrian served on the vestry and was a devoted Sunday School Teacher and mentor for many years.

Mayor Mapp served the residents of Plainfield on the City Council since 1998 and as a Union County Freeholder from 2005 – 2007. Since becoming Mayor in 2014, Adrian has been presented with awards from the Plainfield Fire Officer’s Association for his service to the residents and for being a beacon of hope for a “New Plainfield”; National Forum of Black Public Administrators (NFBPA) for Outstanding Leadership; I.B.P.O. ELKS of the World for Outstanding and Devoted Service in the Community; 2015 Smart Growth Award for “Netherwood Transit-Oriented Development Plan”; 2014-2015 Service Above Self Award presented by the Rotary Club of Plainfield; 2015 Community Service Award presented by the Plainfield Municipal Utilities Authority; 2015 Distinguished Service Award for Exceptional Leadership presented by Genesis Seventh Day Adventist Church; the Gateway Regional Chamber of Commerce for “2014 Best Peaker”; The Consulate General of Ecuador in NJ for bringing about change to the diverse cultures in the community; and the Rotary Club of Plainfield/North Plainfield for his steadfast approach to enhance the quality of life for residents and property owners in the City of Plainfield.

Adrian is a member of the following organizations: U.S. Conference of Mayors (USCM), N.J. League of Municipalities (NJLOM), N.J. Conference of Mayors (NJCM), American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA), N.J. Legislative Committee, Gateway Regional Chamber of Commerce, Governmental Finance Officers Association of N.J. (GFOA), and the N.J. Black Mayor’s Alliance.

Adrian holds an M.B.A. in International Business from Fairleigh-Dickinson University, a B.S. in Accounting from Rutgers University, and an A.A. in Public Administration from Union County College.  He is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA), a Certified Municipal Finance Officer (C.M.F.O.) and a Qualified Purchasing Agent (QPA).

Adrian is currently the Director of Finance and Qualified Purchasing Agent for the City of Orange Township.

Adrian was born on the Caribbean Island of Barbados, the ancestral home of US Attorney General Eric Holder. Adrian immigrated to the USA in 1977, arriving in Plainfield from NYC in the summer of 1979.  He is believe to be the first Bajan to be elected Mayor of an American City.
